White glazed lawn and ice on the tree
Clear blue sky, crisp sharp and bitter
A wintry walk will make you feel fitter.

Water Nymph

On the Train

Folks get on and folks get off
Glancing at reservations and the odd nervous cough
Onward we go towards our destination
Passing the fields and hills of our nation

Some facing forward, some the other way
Some very quiet, some with a lot to say
Noise of the carriage rattling away
Train speeds forward as we go through the day.

Empty Shops

Walking around the town centre – so many empty shops

Another dream gone, sale signs tell a tale
The business started with hope, is now up for sale
hats off to the folk who have tried
It is such a shame the business has died

It’s not easy starting from scratch
It takes courage and energy to open the latch
the key is to build a good customer base
It’s a shame it doesn’t happen in every case.

The Giant

I slowly walked along the street
Suddenly I heard what sounded like feet
Two huge hairy legs I saw stomping along
A giant is approaching he is singing a song

Two big black boots
Make the floor and earth shake
Oh please stop stomping
For goodness sake

So the giant stopped
Didnt know what to say
I’m sorry he said
I hope your homes ok

So if you see a giant
Stomping around your street
Don’t be afraid to tell it
Dont’ be afraid to speak.

The man at the back

Cloudy mind nothing clear
man at the back in your ear
oh for clarity in your mind
not thinking clearly is such a bind
doubts and voices in your head
really influencing what is said
clear thinking is so good to get
the man at the back tries not to let.

Devices on a train

On a train journey from York to Durham the amount of activity and chatter from people using various devices got me thinking.
The poem Devices on a Train is the result – hope you like.

laptop, notepad, smart phone
beep, flicker, connect and drone
machines on people’s laps
many little taps
linking to contacts by email and text
looking at messages and selecting the next
constant sound of ring tones
of blackberries and i-phones
the journey has changed from a time before
connecting to others, now at the fore.

On our way to catch the ferry to France – August 2011

The different shades of green
A beautiful sight to be seen
The sun breaks through the sky
Jonathan’s deciding what to buy
We’re following a caravan
Keeping our distance as best we can
It’s not long to go
Before we reach Plymouth Hoe
Lucy’s jotting down the notes
Soon be seeing lots of boats

On the road again

The road was straight to our first stop
Air conditioning on, the car was getting hot
Lanes of grey tarmac in our forward view
Entering Derbyshire, just passing through
Cars entering from the left to join the road
A lot like us with a full holiday load
Kids watching Willy Wonka in the back
I’m thinking we should have bought a cycle rack
The road is now lined by rows of trees
Map and directions on my knees
We’re getting there slowly bit by bit
Sure is a long time to sit

Greyhound

Sleek and tall, keen and lean
Short coat clipped to a sheen
He knows its time, he’s been here before
Into the trap, handler closes the door
Not much room to move, the hare is on its way
trap springs open, he’s quickly out of his bay
Into first corner, its crowded around here
Down the straight he’s two lengths clear
where’s that hare he know’s he’s around
crowd starts to cheer he can hear the sound
chasing the hare the light flashes past
he’s won the race by going so fast
the punters collect what they have won
the greyhound is tired the race is done.
